Now in Beta

Rankless

RPG chess you can play anywhere. Your pieces have health, levels, and gear - and they carry every scar with them into the next battle.

The Game

Chess, Except Your Pieces Level Up

Captures aren't instant in Rankless. Pieces have hit points, attack, and defense, so a fight over a square is an actual fight - and the piece that survives it keeps the experience. Your knight who's been through three campaigns plays nothing like a fresh recruit.

RPG Combat

HP, attack, defense, and a block chance that scales with armor. Skills change the math - piercing, execute, lifesteal, reflect damage, splash, and regeneration. Melee pieces advance into the square; knights and archers strike from range.

A Persistent Army

Every individual piece earns XP and levels independently, gaining health, attack, defense, and speed as it goes. Not the piece type - that pawn. It's your roster, and you build it one battle at a time.

Gear That Changes Rules

Dozens of weapons, armor, and accessories across five rarities - and the good stuff grants mechanics, not just numbers. A Longbow makes a piece ranged. Thorn Mail reflects damage. A Healing Staff turns a bishop into a medic.

Speed Decides Turns

In battle rooms, an initiative queue replaces strict alternating turns. Build a faster army and you simply act more often - a whole axis of strategy chess doesn't have.

Ways to Play

Five Games in One Board

Underneath all of it is a complete, legal chess engine - en passant, castling, promotion, pins, checkmate, stalemate. Everything else is built on top of a game that plays by the real rules.

Campaign

Act I, The Verdant Kingdom: a branching run of hand-built rooms that each teach one real chess idea - the knight's L, the fork, the pin, the back-rank mate - wrapped in story beats, shops, rest stops, and a boss who tells you the pieces were only ever tools.

Adventure

Leave the board entirely. Walk your hero through the Blackreach Dungeons, dodge patrols, crack open chests, recruit prisoners into your army, and drop into a battle whenever something blocks the way out.

Online Multiplayer

Real matchmaking against real people, with live clocks and increment, draw offers, resignation, and a match history that tracks your record. Bullet, Blitz, Rapid, or multi-day correspondence.

Classic Chess

Want none of the RPG? Play straight chess against a proper engine with search, position evaluation, and a difficulty ladder from beginner to genuinely unpleasant.

Puzzles

Mate-in-N puzzles with timed records - plus a built-in editor so you can build your own positions, share them, and see what other people made of yours.

Make It Yours

A 3D perspective board if you want atmosphere, flat 2D if you want clarity. Eight board themes from Forest to Volcanic to Void, plus piece sets and board sidings earned or bought with what you win.

Characters

Every Piece Has a Role

The classic six become archetypes with their own stat lines, abilities, and upgrade paths. Heroes bring the whole army with them: a King inspires nearby allies to hit harder, and a Queen's dominance lets her strike several enemies at once.

The King
Sovereign: Inspires nearby allies
The Queen
Champion: Strikes multiple foes
The Rook
Guardian: Excellent defense
The Bishop
Sage: Arcane diagonal striker
The Knight
Ranger: Leaps and hits at range
The Pawn
Recruit: Hidden potential

What Beta Means Here

Rankless is playable right now, free, at ranklesschess.com - no download and no account required to start. The game is feature-complete, but the world is still filling in: Act I of the campaign and the first adventure map are the story content so far, and more is being built. Expect the occasional rough edge, and tell me when you find one.

Go Build an Army

Rankless is in beta and free to play - open it in a browser and you're in. It's still being actively built, so if something breaks or an idea would make it better, tell me.
